Neal Joseph Smatresk (born July 9, 1951) is the 9th and current president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, appointed to the position on August 6, 2009, after his predecessor David B. Ashley was dismissed.[1]
Smatresk attended University of Texas at Austin, where he received a Ph.D. in zoology in 1980. He received post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He served on the faculty of the Department of Biology at the University of Texas at Arlington from 1982 to 2004, during which time he served as Chair of Biology and Dean of Science. He was appointed chief executive officer of the University of Hawaii in 2004, and was appointed Executive Vice President and Provost of UNLV in 2007. On July 10, 2009, he became Acting President of UNLV, and was appointed to the position of President on August 6, 2009.
Smatresk has published over 50 papers and book chapters in the field of cardiorespiratory physiology, and has been awarded grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.[2]
